more on the Terrapin


The word "terrapin" is derived from the Algonquian Indian word "torope" and refers to a variety of North American aquatic turtles of the family Emydiolae.

The turtle is an animal whose magic can help us unite heaven and earth within our own being. Traditional Chinese medicine ascribes great power to the turtle – to purify the blood, to cure diseases and to bestow longevity and virility.
 
Turtles hear by sensing vibrations in the water through their skin and shell. Turtle totems hold the mystery of awakening of the senses – on both physical and spiritual levels. If you have turtle energy, you value both the waters of the earth and the magic of the heavens, for turtle symbolizes both the grounding quality of earth energy and the magic of the mystical. Using turtle energy can help you to achieve real balance in our life and our spirit.

Because of their slow movement, turtles are much more aware of what is going on around them. Turtle medicine reminds us to slow down and look at where we are right now. It may be that our lives have become habits, something we feel we "should" do because someone else expects it of us. Maybe we would really like to be doing something different and Turtle is here to say that there is something better if we but take a minute to float in the waters of life and look to see what it might be. Many of the health issues we face today are due to stress, the constant race towards the next finish line; do this so we can have that, without ever asking if this is even what we really want out of life. For too many of us, the time to stop and think about what life really means happens only after we are diagnosed with cancer, or have a heart attack, or perhaps a serious accident. Wise Turtle knows that by moving slowly and calmly, we allow the doors of intuition to open, to not only see new possibilities, but to imagine the easiest and clearest way to achieve those possibilities. Pushing the river not only will not bring them any faster, but on an energy level, may actually repel those things from us. When Turtle leaves the river for a sand bank and raises her head into the warm light of awareness, she is coming from a place of balance and abundance.
